Melanie Tomlin was born in Beeston, England. At the age of three her family moved to suburban Melbourne, Australia, where she has lived ever since. When she was twelve her parents bought her a typewriter, and she wrote her first novel that very same year. She still has the typewriter, which is somewhat worse for wear, but that first manuscript is now nothing but a distant memory.

I have slept for eternity. Now I must wake. My body has changed while I’ve slept. Layers of fat from my gluttonous youth have gone, replaced by a slender, streamlined body. I feel strange. Somehow there is more to me now than there was before. Do not dwell on such things, for surely to tarry is to die. I must press forward, leaving my sanctuary. There is much to see and do, wary though I am of what this ever-changing world may bring. The warmth of the sun fills me with hope. It is time for me to fly.
