They knew something was wrong when Shelley started screaming. A teaching assistant had mentioned she’d come to school without her socks, her hair tangled. There was something, possibly jam, on her skirt. Mrs Culbert made a note to speak with Shelley’s mum at home time. Then, she had begun to scream. They couldn’t quieten her, nor make sense of the garbled words falling from her mouth, faster than the tears streaking her grubby cheeks. On the news that night they showed the flowers, the candles, the beginnings of a shrine and Shelley, shocked into silence as they took her away.

I really enjoyed this super little drabble. It has a lovely tone and atmosphere - very clever in such a teeny word count.
