His mother walked with him to the school gates. His bag containing his lunch was grasped firmly in his hands. The gates were open and the playground strangely quiet at this early hour.

She kissed him on the cheek, saying, “I’m going to get my bus for work. Have a good day.'

He smiled nervously.

“You’ll be fine,' she said, walking away. When she looked back, he was still standing at the gates, half-turned as if contemplating making a run for it.

She called out, “In you go, you don’t want to be late. After all, you’re the headmaster.'
