I met Peg Leg Pete in a secluded cove in the Caribbean. “How did you lose your leg?' I asked.

“Shark bit it off at the knee. I whittled me own wooden leg.'

“And your right hand?' I nodded at the vicious iron hook at the end of his sleeve.

“Got in a fight. Revenue man ’acked it clean off.'

“And the eye patch? How did you lose your eye?'

“I was looking up at the riggin’ one day and a seagull pooped in it.'

“But why did you lose it?'

“I still hadn’t got the ’ang o’ the ’ook!'
