The Mars Effect

by John Vassar
Originally published by on 10/03/2018

“How could you?' Sofia’s eyes were ablaze. “Now she’s lost forever. Lost in this damn red dustbowl!'

Her father stared silently out of the portal over the bleak Martian landscape. He had lied to Sofia. Every first generation colonist had the right for their cremated remains to be returned to Earth.

“I hate you! You brainwashed Mum into coming here in the first place!'

Ignoring her sobs, he said softly, “No I didn’t. We shared the same dream.'

His wife had changed her mind, though. And very soon Sofia would be joining her mother, adrift on the cold Martian wind.
